How to Take Care of Your Tattoo

When you get a fresh tattoo, only half of the process is done. The other half is the result of how well you take care of your new tattoo!

Be aware that each person reacts differently when it comes to healing. Your artist will guide you to choose what is going to work better in your situation.

The two most common adopted after care protections are:

SECOND SKIN

You can leave on for 2-3 days & change it whenever it gets dirty, too loose or full of liquids. Follow artist’s recommendations. The easiest way to remove it is in the shower. Wash  thoroughly with lukewarm water and gently rub off the remaining glue with unscented soap. Do not force it! Pat dry with clean paper towel and let air dry completely. Moisturise the tattoo lightly applying a THIN layer of tattoo aftercare balm whenever it gets dry (try at least 3x a day).

The second skin is waterproof, breathable and stays in place, protecting your tattoo from rubbing on clothes and bacteria, decreasing the chances of infection.

CLING FILM

Leave your bandage on for at least 2 hours.  Remember to wash your hands well before you touch your tattoo.  After the removal of bandage wash thoroughly with lukewarm water and preferably a mild, liquid unscented soap.  Pat dry with clean paper towel and let air dry completely before wrapping it again. No need for balms just yet.  Repeat this process for 3 days (follow artists recommendations).  Change  your wrapping at least 3x a day.  After the 3rd day your  skin will need to breath as much as possible so it can heal properly, so no need for cling film anymore. Moisturise your tattoo with aftercare balm throughout the day until it’s healed.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

After getting a tattoo, it's important to maintain healthy habits to ensure proper healing and preserve the quality of your new ink.

  • Remember, your tattoo is essentially an open wound! By following good aftercare practices, such as keeping the area clean and moisturised, you create an environment that promotes faster healing and reduces the risk of infection.
  • Healing time is usually 2-4 weeks depending on the piece.
  •  Your tattoo will peel off like a sunburn after a few days, it’s totally normal to see coloured flakes of skin shedding. If it does scab in a few areas this is nothing to worry about, just let them fall off own their own.
  • Tattoos can get itchy during the healing process, but scratching can damage the delicate skin and disrupt the healing process. DO NOT scratch or pick the scabs as this  will leave blank spots that will need touching up.
  • NO SWIMMING and no soaking in water of any kind for at least 3 weeks (Showers are fine as long as you don’t soak your tattoo for too long). Over-saturating your tattoo will soften the scabs and will cause them to fall prematurely taking away the ink, causing fading or distortion of the design. Soaking your tattoo also increases the chances of introducing bacteria or other contaminants, which can lead to infection.
  • No heavy workouts or any activities that might damage your tattoo. Sweating during exercise creates a moist environment that can promote bacterial growth and increase the chances of infection. Intense workouts can also disrupt the healing stages of the tattoo, potentially leading to patchy or uneven healing. Intense movements and rubbing against clothing can irritate the healing tattoo, leading to scabbing, peeling, or fading.
  • DO NOT expose fresh tattoos to the SUN! By avoiding excessive sun exposure and protecting your tattoo from UV rays, you prevent fading and keep the colours looking fresh for longer. You can use natural & organic sun-creams after 1 week but NO FAKE TAN or any other cosmetic products for at least 3 weeks.
  • Maintaining healthy habits after a tattoo session ensures proper healing, preserves the colors and quality of your tattoo, prevents itching and discomfort, minimizes the risk of infection, and helps you proudly display your artwork for years to come!
  • Please get in touch when your tattoo is fully healed to make sure it doesn’t need a touch up and to get a nice healed portfolio picture!
